Hamden High Class of 1973 - Helen Street News 1965

While we all have many memories of our childhood, there is nothing that brings it into focus like finding a momento to take us back to those carefree days. That momento could be a photograph, something we wrote or a memory that someone else has that you had forgotten.

To the Helen Street folks, Jim Blackie saved an astonishing momento -- The Inter-4 Special from March 1965. It was basically a school newspaper from the 4th grade's point of view. In addition to discussing what was going on in around the school, the reporters shared stories and poems, told jokes and riddles, and challenged their classmates with puzzles (Jim had completed most of the puzzles, but they have been refreshed for your amusement).

There is a tendency to trivialize the musings of the youth, but we shouldn't fall into that trap. Every piece helped make the newspaper what it was, and that in itself has its own charm. If you want Shakespeare, then read Macbeth. If you want to see what was important to 10-year-olds in 1965, then you've come to the right place.

Jim, thanks for sharing this with the class.
